The first museum in which this work was exhibited, the Mus\u00e9e Marmottan was rechristened the Mus\u00e9e Marmottan Monet in the 1990s. It belongs to France\u2019s Acad\u00e9mie des beaux-arts (Academy of Fine Arts), which built up its Impressionist collection around this masterpiece.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to a donation by the artist\u2019s family made in 1966, over 100 further paintings, along with sketchbooks and numerous personal objects from <a href=\"https:\/\/voyagesimpressionnistes.com\/en\/giverny-its-surroundings\/maison-et-jardins-de-claude-monet\/\">Monet\u2019s home in Giverny<\/a>, considerably enhanced the collection. That\u2019s how the Mus\u00e9e Marmottan Monet came to display the world\u2019s largest ensemble of works by this master of Impressionism, having become his exclusive beneficiary.<\/p>\n<p>In the 200m<sup>2<\/sup> space devoted to the canvases of Impressionism\u2019s leading exponent, first admire landscapes of Normandy, Italy and the Netherlands\u2026 before arriving in front of the truly exceptional array of monumental canvases depicting <em>Nymph\u00e9as<\/em> and Monet\u2019s gardens at Giverny. These works, not seen by the public during the artist\u2019s lifetime, were put on general display for the first time in this museum. Alongside pieces from Claude Monet\u2019s early days as an artist and from his mature period, his final <em>Pont japonais<\/em> and <em>Maison vue de l\u2019all\u00e9e aux roses<\/em> bear rare witness to the master of Impressionism\u2019s output at the end of his life.<\/p>\n<p>One of world\u2019s major centres dedicated to Impressionism, the Mus\u00e9e Marmottan Monet also holds the leading collection of works by Berthe Morisot, one of the outstanding women painters of the Impressionist movement. <em>Le Cerisier<\/em> and <em>Eug\u00e8ne Manet \u00e0 l\u2019\u00cele de Wight<\/em> count among her most famous paintings, displayed here alongside canvases by Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot, Eug\u00e8ne Manet, Gustave Caillebotte, Camille Pissarro, Alfred Sisley, Auguste Renoir and Paul Gauguin, among others.<\/p>\n<p>As well as the museum\u2019s permanent collections, exhibitions based around Impressionism and its artists are presented within the walls of the Mus\u00e9e Marmottan Monet and beyond.
