Along the Seine\u2019s meanders and around the Seine Estuary, as well as down the C\u00f4te d\u2019Alb\u00e2tre, several Impressionist trails link iconic places where the movement\u2019s painters set up their easels in Normandy. Around Rouen, La Bouille, Le Havre, \u00c9tretat, F\u00e9camp and Dieppe, these trails, dotted with information panels, enable visitors to discover reproductions of Impressionist works in situ, accompanied by explanatory texts. A QR code is available for those wishing to look up more about a specific artist or work.<\/p>\n

In Rouen: “L’instant impressionniste”<\/h3>\n

This walk across the city of Rouen takes you via the square in front of the cathedral<\/a> that inspired Monet to paint his famed series of 28 canvases focusing on it in varied weather and at different times of day. The way then leads you through the streets of the medieval centre, including Rue de l\u2019\u00c9picerie<\/em>, on to Rouen\u2019s port, very different in looks today than when it was portrayed in Port industriel, Saint Sever<\/em>, two works by the Impressionist Camille Pissarro.<\/p>\n

Starting out from Rouen, you can also follow the walking trail \u201cLe fleuve impressionniste\u201d, which takes you via La Bouille<\/a>, already appreciated in the 19th<\/sup> century by inhabitants of Rouen for outings, along the Seine\u2019s meanders up to Villequier, a town depicted by Turner.<\/p>\n

In Le Havre: “La lumi\u00e8re de l’estuaire”<\/h3>\n

Going from Le Havre\u2019s seafront to its central docks, this walk takes you beside the sea from Sainte-Adresse Beach and on via MuMA<\/a>, an art museum bathed in light, perfect for admiring its rich collection of Impressionist works.<\/p>\n

From Le Havre, the walking trail “La mer impressionniste” invites walkers to embark on an adventure linking places with exceptional views of the C\u00f4te d\u2019Alb\u00e2tre and its great cliffs that so impressed Monet. In \u00c9tretat, do make sure you visit the Jardins d\u2019\u00c9tretat<\/a>; in F\u00e9camp, the Mus\u00e9e des P\u00eacheries<\/a> enables you to discover works painted by a good number of Impressionism\u2019s precursors while making the most of the fine views down over the port.<\/p>\n

In Dieppe: “La vill\u00e9giature impressionniste”<\/h3>\n

A third walking trail has been set up in the seaside resort of Dieppe, overseen by its imposing 15th<\/sup> century ch\u00e2teau-museum<\/a> containing a lovely selection of Impressionist works.<\/p>\n

From Dieppe, you can continue to explore the Impressionist C\u00f4te d\u2019Alb\u00e2tre by heading on to the Mus\u00e9e Jacques-\u00c9mile Blanche<\/a> in Offranville, the village where this artist spent the last period of his life.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
