{"id":5570,"date":"2022-03-18T16:17:43","date_gmt":"2022-03-18T15:17:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/voyagesimpressionnistes.com\/uncategorized\/millet-the-peasant-painter-from-la-hague\/"},"modified":"2023-09-15T12:47:22","modified_gmt":"2023-09-15T10:47:22","slug":"millet-the-peasant-painter-from-la-hague","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/voyagesimpressionnistes.com\/en\/caen-the-cotentin\/millet-the-peasant-painter-from-la-hague\/","title":{"rendered":"Millet, the peasant painter from La Hague"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The La Hague area at the northern end of the windswept Cotentin Peninsula invites visitors to explore the childhood world of artist Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Millet, discovering the places that inspired him, such as the Rocher du Castel-Vendon (depicted in<em>Le Rocher du Castel<\/em>, at the <a href=\"\/de-caen-au-cotentin\/musee-thomas-henry\/\">Mus\u00e9e Thomas Henry<\/a> in Cherbourg), or the village of Gr\u00e9ville-Hague and its church (the latter shown in<em>L\u2019\u00e9glise de Gr\u00e9ville<\/em>, at the <a href=\"\/paris-montmartre\/musee-d-orsay\/\">Mus\u00e9e d&#8217;Orsay<\/a>)&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Born in the hamlet of Gruchy, this precursor of Impressionism became the leading figure among the School of Barbizon painters, some canvases in fact to be viewed at the <a href=\"\/barbizon-yerres\/musee-des-peintres-de-barbizon\/\">Mus\u00e9e des peintres de Barbizon<\/a>. His work exploring Normandy\u2019s ever so distinctive light effects intrigued Claude Monet, followed by Vincent van Gogh. Before heading off to be trained in painting in an artists\u2019 studio, Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Millet worked on the family farm, but was introduced to culture by his priestly uncle. He is is often described as the \u201cpeasant painter\u201d, as he chose farm work and modest agricultural workers as one of his favourite subjects, as in his best-know masterpieces, <em>Des glaneuses<\/em> and <em>L\u2019Ang\u00e9lus<\/em>, both at the Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Orsay in Paris.<\/p>\n<p>Starting out from the <a href=\"\/de-caen-au-cotentin\/maison-natale-de-millet\/\">house of Millet\u2019s birth<\/a>, enjoy several walking circuits set up by the d\u00e9partement (or French county) of La Manche to encourage visitors to explore the landscapes Millet captured on canvas. One leads you to the coast and up to the Belv\u00e9d\u00e8re de Landemer, from where the views over wild, unspoilt landscapes often lashed by the winds are thrilling to contemplate. The way is dotted with some 10 panels featuring reproductions of certain of the artist\u2019s most iconic works, such as <em>Les Deux B\u00eacheurs<\/em> or <em>Falaises de Gr\u00e9ville<\/em>. This circuit along the coastal path adds up to a round trip of 5km in total.<\/p>\n<p>A shorter walking trail just 1km in length takes you along the coastguards\u2019 path up to the viewing point of Le Castel Vendon, while a more demanding 3-hour circuit will appeal to seasoned hikers, taking them through sublime landscapes around the La Hague Peninsula via places that greatly inspired Millet.<\/p>\n<p>Note that horse-riding outings are also available for young and old alike via the <a href=\"https:\/\/fr-fr.facebook.com\/pages\/category\/Agricultural-Cooperative\/Les-poneys-du-Cat%C3%A9-782423138448954\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Poney Club du
