Following on from a year celebrating the 150th anniversary of Monet\u2019s iconic canvas, Impression, soleil levant (Impression, Sunrise)<\/a>, the year 2023 sees new major Impressionist exhibtions based around different artists, such as Manet \/ Degas<\/em>, put to the fore at Paris\u2019s Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Orsay, or Berthe Morisot, remembered at the Mus\u00e9e Marmottan Monet<\/a>. However, first and foremost, Vincent van Gogh will be celebrated<\/a> in 2023, honouring 170 years since his birth. Two major exhibitions are taking place in France, the first at the Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Orsay, the second at the Ch\u00e2teau d\u2019Auvers just northwest of the French capital. Finally, an exhibition focusing on the theme of the Children of Impressionism<\/em> has been open since spring at the Mus\u00e9e des impressionnismes Giverny.<\/p>\n

Manet \/ Degas<\/em>, at the Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Orsay<\/h3>\n

From 28 March to 23 July 2023, the Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Orsay<\/a> presents the exhibition Manet \/ Degas<\/a>. Comparing and contrasting these two painters so marked by Impressionism, it shines a light on the points they had in common, notably their contributions to creating new ways of painting, but also highlights their many differences. Visitors can learn how these artists came to define themselves, emphasising their distinctive styles. Bringing together masterpieces never before seen together, notably thanks to an unprecedented partnership with The Metropolitan Museum of Art<\/a> (New York), the exhibition enables you to contemplate in a new light the fleeting bond and lasting rivalry between these giants of the art world, revealed so clearly here.<\/p>\n

The Children of Impressionism (Les Enfants de l\u2019Impressionnisme)<\/em>, at the Mus\u00e9e des impressionnismes Giverny<\/h3>\n

In Normandy, from 31 March to 2 July 2023, the Mus\u00e9e des impressionnismes Giverny<\/a> is putting on an exhibition on the theme of childhood at the time of the Impressionists. During the French Third Republic (beginning in 1870), as statesman Jules Ferry strove to put in place education for the working classes in particular, artists relished tackling the theme of childhood in the latter stages of the 19th<\/sup> century. The Children of Impressionism (Les Enfants de l\u2019Impressionnisme)<\/em><\/a> brings together some 100 canvases by the greatest masters of the period (with the likes of Renoir, Monet and Pissarro, not forgetting female Impressionists Cassatt and Morisot) focusing on the different activities and stages of childhood, from birth through to adolescence. <\/p>\n

Van Gogh in Auvers-sur-Oise. The final months<\/em>, at the Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Orsay<\/h3>\n

The year 2023 marks 170 years since Vincent van Gogh was born. To celebrate the fact, a major retrospective of the great artist\u2019s works painted by him in just two months at the end of his life is being presented by the Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Orsay from 3rd October 2023 to 4th February 2024. Van Gogh in Auvers-sur-Oise. The final months<\/em><\/a>. Staged in partnership with the Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam<\/a>, it brings together, for the first time, paintings and drawings from this immensely creative period in the artist\u2019s life. Among the masterpieces on display will be Portrait of Dr. Gachet<\/em>, The Church at Auvers-sur-Oise<\/em> and Wheatfield with Crows<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Van Gogh: the last journeys<\/em>, at the Ch\u00e2teau d\u2019Auvers<\/h3>\n

In conjunction with the Van Gogh exhibition at Paris\u2019s Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Orsay, the ch\u00e2teau<\/a> in the town of Auvers-sur-Oise welcomes visitors to an event dedicated to the final years of Vincent van Gogh\u2019s life. From 7th octobre 2023 to 2nd novembre 2025, Van Gogh: the last journeys<\/em><\/a>, enjoy an immersive experience combining period works and contemporary technology, showing the sources of inspiration from which Van Gogh drew on his artistic and geographical explorations around France, taking him from Paris, via Arles and Saint-R\u00e9my-de-Provence, to end up at Auvers-sur-Oise.<\/p>\n

Berthe Morisot and her links with 18th<\/sup> century art<\/em>, at the mus\u00e9e Marmottan Monet<\/h3>\n

From 18th octobre 2023 to 3rd mars 2024, in partnership with the Dulwich Picture Gallery, London, the mus\u00e9e Marmottan Monet opens its doors to the exhibition Berthe Morisot and her links with 18th<\/sup> century art<\/em><\/a>. Invariably focused on contemporary life in her paintings, her pieces were often, even during her lifetime, compared with the works of certain Enlightenment French artists. The exhibition compares the works of Berthe Morisot, an Impressionist woman, with 18th<\/sup> century paintings and the spirit that inspired her work.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
