This house served from 1874 until his death in 1898 as a holiday home for Stéphane Mallarmé, an “Impressionist poet”, according to Victor Hugo, and “best friend” and defender of Édouard Manet. Now it has become the Musée Départemental Mallarmé.
Reconstituted using Mallarmé’s furniture and personal objects, as well as paintings by some of his artist friends, today it enables visitors to discover where he lived and created as a poet and art critic. Berthe Morisot and her daughter Julie Manet painted in the lovely gardens, parts devoted to flowers, others to garden produce.
