• Exhibition "Berthe Morisot et l'art du 18ème siècle" au musée Marmottant Monet: poster

The Musée Marmottan Monet presents, from 18 October 2023 to 3 March 2024, the exhibition Berthe Morisot et l’art du 18ème siècle. Conceived in partnership with the Dulwich Picture Gallery, London, this exhibition was shown there up to 10 September 2023, under the title “Berthe Morisot: Shaping Impressionism”.

While female Impressionnist Berthe Morisot (1841-1895) invariably focused on contemporary life in her paintings, her pieces were often, even during her lifetime, compared with the works of certain 18th century French artists, causing Renoir to describe her as “the last elegant, ‘feminine’ artist we’ve had since Fragonard.”

Viewing the posthumous exhibition dedicated to Morisot in 1896, French intellectual Paul Girard remarked:

It’s the 18th century, only modernised!

The exhibition Berthe Morisot et l’art du 18ème siècle examines the origins of Morisot’s inspiration and demonstrates, thanks to the supporting evidence of 18th century works displayed side by side with Morisot’s iconic Impressionist pieces, the ways in which she was deeply influenced by the previous period and her understanding of the genius of certain Enlightenment painters.

Experience the moments of happiness that inspired painters in Normandy and Paris Region for the 150th anniversary of Impressionism!
