Visiting Giverny, embark on a sensory adventure on Normandy’s eastern border, in the ‘‘ever so beautiful corner of the world” Claude Monet adopted in 1883. Monet lived for 43 years in this little village of just 300 souls. Based here, he found international recognition, painting famous series such as his Nymphéas (Water lilies), Meules (Haystacks) and Peupliers (Poplars). Exploring the village, experience the sensations that inspired the great painter – landscapes changing with the shifting light and wind, explosions of colour, cascades of flowers and never-ending reflections.
Plunge further into this pictorial atmosphere by visiting the artist’s house and gardens, as well as the Musée des Impressionnismes and the many galleries strung along the village lanes. Making its presence felt on the area around Giverny is that most stately of French rivers, the Seine. From Vernon to Les Andelys via Mantes-la-Jolie, this impetuous, rebellious character, in some ways similar to the Impressionists, inspired the likes of Claude Monet, Paul Signac and Maximilien Luce.
